No Grits No Glory by Elaine Calloway [Guest Post]

Chick Lit

Brianna fled down South to Savannah to escape the voices of the dead. Just when she thought she’d left all paranormal things behind, she discovers her house is haunted—by a family of Southern ghosts. These persistent beings not only hide her white shoes after Labor Day, but they wreak havoc on her life to convince her to help them bring their killer to justice.

Steven put Savannah in his rearview mirror years ago to follow his passion for music. When his band splits up and he can’t reach his little sister for weeks, he races home—only to learn his whole family died in a mysterious house fire. The house Brianna now lives in.

Together, Brianna and Steven learn who murdered Steven’s family and become caught in a web of intrigue that will threaten their careers, their homes–but especially their lives.

Lowcountry Shrimp and Grits is a favorite in Savannah and along the coast to Hilton Head. This decadent meal, which No Grits No Glory‘s Brianna and Steven enjoy, reflects the local culture.

Lowcountry Shrimp & Grits

2-3 cups grits (real, do not use instant)

1 cup heavy cream

2-3 cups milk

1 pound bacon

1 stick butter

1 pound deveined shrimp

– Soak the grits in milk for several hours.

– Cook the bacon on the stovetop (fry) and set bacon aside on plate BUT do not wash out pan – keep the bacon grease in the pan as a base.

– Cook the shrimp in the bacon grease, add salt/pepper seasonings as desired.

– Use that as the base to cook and/or reheat the shrimp.

– Once shrimp is cooked, take out of pan & set aside.

– Cook the grits in butter & heavy cream until desired consistency.

– Add bacon, seasoning, shrimp on top & serve.
